Toto and Bahrain

In the first race the maximum score of 44 meters, which is a fantastic result what to take. A better start to the season we could have imagined. But the fight has just begun: Ferrari will do everything in his Power to strike back. In addition, Melbourne has shown that Red Bull wants to have a word to say. We have seen the Potential in the package of the Ferrari in Barcelona and expect that you will come in Bahrain, strengthened back, and even Red Bull on the front is involved.

In Bahrain a completely different race waiting for us. The weekend presents us with unique challenges, particularly in view of the changed track conditions during the Sessions. The first and the third Training will take place on the day when both the air and track temperature are very high. The second free practice, Qualifying and the race are held in significantly cooler temperatures in the evening. These temperature changes make it difficult for the car to correctly adjust and find the right settings for the key Sessions.

After the test drives in Barcelona, we had the feeling that we were the Challenger. No matter how one interprets the results from Melbourne, our attitude has not changed as a result. A race alone does not determine the balance of power for the Rest of the season. We need to get out every ounce of Performance out of our package and continue to work hard to improve our car over the weekend and to be competitive. In the past years, we have seen in Bahrain, some great races, so I am looking forward to an exciting weekend.

Feature of the week: race in the desert

For the second race of the formula 1 season in 2019, the Teams travel to Bahrain. The Bahrain International Circuit, with its location in the desert, a number of challenges – from the heat of the Sand on the track to a shifted schedule. Let’s take a look at how the formula 1 Teams deal with these challenges.

What temperatures can we expect in Bahrain?

In the past years, the temperatures rose at the day of 38 degrees Celsius and more. The track temperatures reached values of over 50 degrees. While the temperatures of the day be extremely high, decrease both the distance as well as the air temperature after the sunset. The second free practice, Qualifying and the race will take place at 18:00 local time. Accordingly, these three Sessions will be held in significantly cooler conditions. The air temperatures are only between 20 and 30 degrees and track temperatures over 30 degrees. This year, it will, however, be a little cooler and in the days before the weekend is even expected to be light rain.

How do formula 1 cars to high temperatures?

A number of components, including the Power Unit, the transmission and the electrical systems, would suffer if the Team would be using them over a longer period of time over their temperature limits. Accordingly, the Team is open for use at high temperatures, the Bodywork of the W10 and installed additional cooling to prevent Overheating of the components. This is accompanied by a loss of aerodynamic Performance, however, since additional air, more air intakes produce resistance and the air flow around the car disturbing. This in turn has a negative impact on the efficiency of the rear wing and the diffuser. Depending on the aerodynamic configuration using the Team, may be the difference on the stopwatch. A completely closed car several tenths of a seconds per lap faster than a maximum cooling-tuned car.

Can use the Teams in the Qualifying round, a different cooling configuration as in the race?

Yes and no. The rules state that the F1 Teams have to start the race with the same cooling setup that you used in Qualifying. The cooling inlets can be at the Parc Fermé not changed. However, the Bodywork can be opened during a pit stop, if the sensor on the vehicle, certain components to overheat. Thus, the cooling plate can be, for example, under the head protection of the driver in the Cockpit is relatively easy to open. The vents can be covered for Qualifying and the first Stint, and then during a pit stop. The additional three to five percent of additional cooling for the second Stint.

The first and the third Training will be held in the heat of the day. The second free practice, Qualifying and the race are held at cooler temperatures in the evening. What is the impact?

The changing conditions during the Sessions mean that the drive is in the case of representative conditions is limited. The second Training is the only Session, which takes place at comparable temperatures as the race. Accordingly, the team wants to concentrate their Rennprogrammen on the Friday evening. Although the heat is not during the first training will be ideal for Long-Run simulations that can take advantage of the Teams, the Session nevertheless useful work on other Parts. To test maybe new components and working on your understanding of the 2019er tires. Finally, the high temperatures approach, take the tires hard and lead to a faster removal and Overheating of the rear tire. The third Training on Saturday is normally used for the Performance of a round. The pilots drive a lot of Abkühlrunden to get the tires for the start of the next round into the temperature window.

How useful is the data from the first and the third Training for the Rest of the weekend?

While the majority of the race preparations will be completed in the second Training, can work to the Teams in the hotter Sessions, something in the Setup. However, you may not of the distribution changes on a wrong scent. Accordingly, the Teams need to be especially careful to ensure that you make the right changes to the vehicle balance, so that the cars will not be tuned for the wrong conditions.

What challenges are there in Bahrain?

The Bahrain International Circuit is located on the territory of a former camel Farm in a rural and flat area. It is surrounded by desert and Sand, where the Wind is blowing, the latter often on the track. As the formula 1, drove for the first Time in Bahrain, asked the engineers whether or not the Sand could potentially have a negative impact on the vehicle systems. Accordingly, they thought a special filter, the Sand will repel. 15 years later, we know that these special filters are not needed. The Sand is very rough, which has a negative influence on the aerodynamic surfaces. Once the 20 cars are on the track, clean the Asphalt relatively quickly. The Asphalt is then in a much better shape. Thus, the Sand effect at the beginning of the Sessions the most, if the Teams are waiting for the other to drive the track clean.
