The 3.0 TDI engine: powerful torque
The 3.0 TDI in the S5 models is the most powerful version of the V6-diesel-series from Audi. He combines Performance with efficiency, and in this Form a unique offering in the Segment. His power is 255 kW (347 HP), its torque of 700 Nm available between 2,500 and 3,100 Rpm. From the WLTP values correlated to the NEDC fuel consumption is both the S5 coupe TDI as well as the S5 Sportback TDI, despite the significantly higher Performance of only 6.2 liters of Diesel per 100 kilometers, a CO2 Equivalent of 161 grams per kilometre. The new S models undercut their predecessors, with the V6 petrol engine in the fuel consumption, despite significantly more torque in the middle to about 19 percent.
The six-cylinder diesel engine brings the S5 coupe in 4.8 seconds and the S5 Sportback in 4.9 seconds from a standstill to 100 km/h. The electronically limited maximum speed is 250 km/h. With these properties is the V6 diesel motor is the ideal drive for agility, spontaneity, low consumption and high range. He has a sporting Sound and high mileage.
The drive of the S-TDI-models integrated the EAV and the Mild-Hybrid technology (MHEV). Both systems are embedded in the standard 48-Volt Main electrical system. For the first time, a powerful 48‑Volt belt works in the S5 TDI-Starter-Generator as the heart of the Mild-Hybrid system with a maximum recuperation power of up to 8 kW. A DC/DC Converter transforms this voltage for the components in the 12‑Volt network. As a Central power in a compact, air-cooled Lithium-ion battery 0.5 kWh capacity, is located under the Luggage compartment floor.
The SAB: fast support for the turbocharger
The electrically-driven compressor in the Audi S5 TDI is a novelty in the Segment. It is located in a Bypass behind the charge air cooler and is thus mounted close to the Motor. Externally the compressor is similar to a conventional exhaust-gas turbocharger, however, replaces a compact E-machine the turbine wheel. It speeds up the compressor wheel with up to 7 kW of power in about 300 milliseconds to 65,000 Revolutions per Minute. This happens, when the load requirement by the driver is high, the energy supply is in the exhaust to drive the compressor wheel, however, low. In this case, the bypass flap closes and the intake directs are going to air to the EAV. The so-compressed air passes directly into the combustion chamber. So is already at low rpm, the concentrated Power of the 3.0 TDI figures immediately ready for use when the driver wishes it, whether or not during Overtaking or when Accelerating on corner exit. In a more relaxed way of driving the technology allows the increase in torque in the lower range of a low level of speed and avoids frequent Downshifts. The fast Start-up, the new S-models to pick from the Start, several meters lead to corresponding comparison vehicles without SAB.
The MHEV technology: recuperation or sailing
The Mild Hybrid System in the S models – so in the new 48-Volt on-Board network is involved, has the potential to reduce the customer consumption by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres. At the front of the 3.0 TDI is a water-seat-belt-cooled-driven Starter Generator (RSG), a particularly resilient wedge-ribbed belt, with the crank shaft connects. The RSG brings it to 8 kilowatts of energy recovery capacity, and 60 Newton metres of torque. He works closely with the TDI engine, which can be characterized in many situations, closer to his ideal point-of-Load. This helps the efficiency.
If the driver is in the range between 55 and 160 km/h from the Gas, can sail the car for up to 40 seconds with the engine switched off completely – the Lithium-ion battery receives the power supply upright. The drive management system decides in each Situation, whether it be sailing, coasting or Recuperation, i.e. the Recovery of kinetic energy, is more efficient. For this it uses the information of the Navigation system and the Onboard sensor. The energy gained by the RSG in the thrust and brake phases, flows in the 48-Volt storage or directly to the electrical consumers.
The Mild-Hybrid System means, in addition to lower fuel consumption and higher comfort. The conventional starter is used only at the first Start when cold engine oil requires high forces. If the driver returns after a coasting phase or a stop again for Gas, the RSG re-start of the internal combustion engine. The System acts as the driver’s wishes and Situation require it, from comfortable to very fast. The Start-stop mode starts at 22 km/h speed. From a standstill, the engine jumps even when depressed the brake, as soon as the front starts to run.
The engine: high-torque and efficient
The 3.0 TDI is equipped with a high-tech. He is doing a 255 kW (347 HP) and maximum torque of 700 Nm available between 2,500 and 3,100 Rpm. Its Common-Rail system injects the fuel at up to 2,500 bar of pressure. Crankshaft, piston, connecting rod and oil supply are designed to meet the high performance requirements in the crankshaft and the camshaft drive to reduce time-consuming measures the friction. The thermal management leads the cooling medium in the separate circuits for the crankcase and cylinder heads, whereby the engine oil warms up after the cold start quickly. Depending on the needs of the oil Cooler, the EAV, the RSG and the compressor housing of the turbocharger are integrated in the coolant flow.
The large exhaust gas turbocharger builds up to 3.4 bar absolute boost pressure. Its variable turbine geometry (VTG) is optimized for low-loss flow. The external low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) the exhaust gas after the particle filter. This allows the operation of the supercharger with the full mass flow, which increases its efficiency significantly.
In many markets outside of Europe, Audi offers the S5-models with a different engine, the 3.0 TFSI. The Turbo-charged, direct injection petrol engine, which dispensed with the EAV, 260 kW (354 HP) and braces of 1,370 up to 4,500 Revolutions per Minute and 500 Nm of torque. So, these models come with quattro all-wheel drive and the Eight-speed tiptronic.
The Eight-speed tiptronic: lightning fast and smooth
The 3.0 TDI directs are going to its torque on a lightning-fast and highly comfortable at the end-of-shift Eight-speed tiptronic. Your lower gears are sportily short, the upper gears speed – and fuel consumption-reducing long-translated. The driver can let the torque Converter automatic self-work or active control to be transferred, wherein its commands electrically. The switching sequence and the Connection logic are optimized for rapid traction building. In Stop-and-Go situations, the transmission control unit avoids unnecessary Circuits.
New detail solutions to improve the close cooperation of the tiptronic with the Mild-Hybrid System. A coupling in the Central transmission circuit interrupts the power if the car rolls and the engine is idling turns on or off. When sailing, it permits to electrical, internal combustion engine-independent oil Pump, the gear that is needed when re-start. Other technology building blocks contribute to the efficiency. To the so-called multi-disc brakes in the gear sets of narrow springs and separate the slats from each other and reduce the torque and thus the Drag. The torsional damper in the Converter, the tiptronic with an integrated rotational speed adaptive absorber, the vibration of the V6 Diesel, the occurrence of numbers at very low engine speeds, for the most part compensated.
The permanent all-wheel drive quattro with self-locking center differential
Of the Eight-speed tiptronic to the quattro permanent allwheel drive transmits the engine force to the wheels. As the heart of the powertrain in the Audi S5 Coupé TDI and S5 Sportback TDI is a self-locking center differential is used. It distributes torque by default, in a ratio of 40:60 between the front and rear axle. If a wheel loose traction, the differential, the bulk of the drive torque to the axle with the better Grip – up to 70 percent can go to the front or up to 85 percent to the rear.
With a sporty driving manner, the wheelset selective moment perfected by control, a software function of the Electronic stabilization control (ESC), the Handling: slows the unloaded inside wheels to a minimum, before you can slip through. The difference between the propulsive forces, the car easily in the curve in the screw – driving behavior is even more precise, agile and stable.
quattro with sport differential
The optional sport optimized for differential driving behavior. During dynamic cornering, the sport differential pushes the car literally in the curve and eliminates any hint of understeer. When turning or Accelerating in a curve, the moments are distributed predominantly to the outside of the curve rear wheel. In sporty cornering, the sport differential provides for stable and precise repositioning of the Steering input, and thus for excellent agility. Thanks to the involvement in the driving dynamics system Audi drive select different options of the sport are also differential selectable.
The sport suspension: available with or without damper control in the millisecond clock
The sophisticated suspension contributes greatly to the dynamics of the S-models. The axles are rebuilt, front and rear Five-link designs and are in wide areas made of aluminum. Two Axle connecting the Arm to the body. The track width is the front of 1.587 and rear 1.568 mm. The wheelbase measures 2.765 mm on the coupe and 2.825 mm in the Sportback.
The steering is translated with a Ratio of 15.9:1, servo support is specifically designed. You cuts on the one hand, disturbing the roadway pulses and, at the same time useful information to the steering Wheel. On request, Audi offers the dynamic steering varies its Translation by a superposition of up to 100 percent of transmission, depending on the driving speed and the driving dynamics system Audi drive select mode you have chosen. In the curve of the border area, the dynamic steering stabilises the car with lightning-Lenkimpulsen almost.
On request, Audi provides the suspension with damper control, the electromagnetic valves regulate the flow of the Oil – energy-efficient: Higher power only flows when the valves are closed to switch the damper tight. Between a soft Roll and crisp taut Handling, a wide range.
The Electronic suspension platform EFP regulates the damper in a cycle of milliseconds. The high-tech control unit collects a lot of information about the movement of the cars and the data of the involved chassis control system. From this it calculates the optimal functioning of these components, and then matches it quickly and accurately to each other. In addition to the controlled dampers, the EFP, therefore, controls the optional sport differential. The latter is, together with the dynamic steering are integrated into the driving dynamics system Audi drive select, which also accesses the throttle, tiptronic, power steering and other technology building blocks. The driver can switch its operation between the profiles of comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency and individual (only with MMI navigation system).
18-inch wheels with tires of the Dimension 245/40 in the S5 Coupé and the S5 Sportback series. On request, there are 19-inchers with series tyres 255/35. The largest wheels for the two S5-TDI models, Audi Sport provides: 20 inches in diameter with tires in the Format 265/30. The brakes are large and powerful. On the front axle, the ventilated discs have a diameter of 375 mm. Black (optional red) painted six-piston fixed callipers with S logo, take in the pliers. The Electronic stabilization control ESC works with high precision; the driver can turn it off partially or completely.
The Design: sporty
Large areas, sharp edges, an exciting play of light and shadow – the exterior design of the S5 is embedded in the progressive design language of Audi. The continuous shoulder line, the S5 coupe and S5 Sportback over the wheel arches with a swing to arched – indicates the permanent all-wheel drive quattro optically.
The wide, low-placed single-frame grille bears double, plastically shaped Aluminum stays, standard LED headlights flank him. The front bumper is pronounced drawn three-dimensional and contour-rich. U-shaped braces to structure the large, five-sided air intakes, which are partly filled with honeycomb grilles. At its outer margin separate Openings to guide a part of the travel winds and in the wheel arches, where it flows aerodynamically to the wheels over. A cross in the bumper extending Blade in aluminium look from the Front to the bottom.
