12.6.2019 Stuttgart. Significantly reduced NOx emissions are an indicator of vehicles, which are certified according to the standard Euro-6d-TEMP. This Commission will now all meet to-order Mercedes-Benz passenger Cars in the new car business. Mercedes-Benz has, moreover, already today a number of vehicles on the market already meet the even more demanding Euro 6d standard. This step is 1.1.2020 binding.
The beginning of the decade, the decision to develop a completely new engine generation is paying off. The implemented innovative technologies provide for low NOx emissions. So meet
with the changeover to the new generation of engines, all order Cars from Mercedes-Benz in the new car business, the standards of Euro-6d-TEMP and Euro 6.
The limit values for NOx for Euro 6d, these are also available in RDE-trips (RDE – Real Driving Emissions) at 80 milligrams per kilometre in the exhaust gas measurements, the so-called “not-to-exceed” limits that must be respected in any valid S-drive. This means that A vehicle must not exceed, under the most unfavorable combinations of the RDE conditions, the value – for example, in the case of heavy loading, hilly terrain, and unfavorable temperature and traffic conditions. In this case, the Limit applies not only to a new vehicle, but also for vehicles with mileage of over 100,000 kilometers. In real Tests, on the road, the limit of 80 milligrams per kilometre, which is often significantly below confirm what independent measurements.
“Mercedes C 300 d is at the top of our “Mr. clean ” hit list”
The specialist magazine auto motor und sport in the current issue[1] reported with the emission measurements of the twelve test cars of different brands, that the tested Mercedes C 300 d T-model “almost NOx-free”. In the Text, the measured combined results to the Mercedes-Benz C 300 d T-model (fuel consumption of 5.6-5.0 l/100 km, CO2‑emissions combined clarified 147-133 g/km)[2]: “He is just 13 milligrams of NOx to the top of our squeaky-clean list. Until Recently, it seemed unthinkable that Diesel ever create search values. […] The new, OM 654-called two-litre Diesel has been trimmed, however, consistently reduced emissions. The NOx is a Problem in many cities is likely to loosen so as soon as more new cars are authorised.“[3]
The ADAC reported in February 2019, extensive measurements[4]: “The NOx-emissions of current cars are located in real-world driving on the street far below the testing limits.” Particularly positive is the Mercedes-sectional-Benz C 220 d (fuel consumption combined 4.8 l/100 km, CO2‑emissions combined 126-117 g/km)2, “be NOx value between 0 and a is mg/km”[5] what is hardly measurable.
Search individual measurements illustrate that the NOx challenge with the new generation of engines can also be used in Diesel vehicles is technically solved. The average emissions of a vehicle over many thousands of miles of mileage in this relationship, but much more meaningful: Here Mercedes‑Benz Car-to-reach with the latest in Diesel technology, the average values of 20 to 30 mg of NOx per kilometre under RDE conditions.
The ADAC provides to the nitrogen emissions from Diesel-solid vehicles of various manufacturers: “Euro-6d-TEMP-Diesel emit on average 76% less NOx than Euro 6b Diesel and 85 percent less than Euro 5 Diesel. Samples for measurements on the street is that the reduction of the Pollutants in the case of good Euro-6d-TEMP diesel fuel in comparison to the average Euro 5 diesel engines have shown that even at 95 to 99 per cent.“[1]
Even more challenging, because with a lower permissible measurement tolerances, the standard Euro 6d. It is prescribed for Neutypen from 1.1.2020 and for other vehicles a year later. Mercedes-Benz has launched in 2016-engine offensive, to include the completely newly designed four-cylinder Diesel (OM 654 and OM 654q), as well as six-cylinder Diesel (OM 656). On this basis, which is associated with investments of around three billion euros, already meet a number of Mercedes-Benz diesel models, the standard Euro-6d – from the A-class to the GLE (the current list as well as a background to the emission standards on the following pages).
The Backgrounds
Not only in the laboratory, but also on the road, to exhaust the gas measurement takes place.
“Decisive is on the pitch” is a soccer spell. In the measurement of emission, this applies to the road. Therefore, Euro-6d-TEMP or the even further-reaching standard Euro 6d is supplemented according to the standard laboratory measurement to the WLTP by the so-called RDE-Test (Real Driving Emissions). Here, pollutants measured in emissions (including nitrogen oxides and particulates) in the case of vehicles directly on the road, and the compliance with limit values non-compliance factors are reviewed.

Mercedes-Benz not only avoids the formation of raw emissions, but also cleans very time-consuming.
Example OM 654q: thanks to further-developed exhaust gas post-treatment of the force meets the full, four-cylinder in a modern engine family OM 654 already today, the first from 2020 binding RDE-Norm (Real Driving Emissions), the level 2 and is certified according to the Euro 6d.
By close to the motor, insulated arrangement, the exhaust aftertreatment has a low heat-loss and in the vast majority of operating conditions very favourable conditions of work. Among the other measures:
High – and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, including cooling,
a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) to reduce emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC),
a particle filter for the separation of soot particles with the combined SCR-Catalyst (sDPF),
a SCR-catalyst (selective catalytic reduction) for the reduction of nitrogen oxides. For this purpose, the exhaust gas is mixed before the sDPF ammonia in the Form of the carrier by means of AdBlue® and recycled,
an additional under-floor-catalytic Converter (SCR) with ammonia blocking catalyst coating (ASC).
The exhaust after-treatment on the example of the diesel engine OM 654q
The so-called NOx emission demonstrator from the Diesel passenger Car development, Mercedes-Benz aims to show how efficiently the exhaust gas purification works. The vehicle has the same engine and exhaust aftertreatment system and control device software 100 percent to the series. By means of additional sensor technology and visualization possibilities, the emission performance is to be on the road in a variety of driving situations “experienced”.
Here, for example, six different trips in a Mercedes-Benz A 220 d (combined fuel consumption of 4.5-4.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined 118-114 g/km)[1] :

3. Since the limits must be met under all possible combinations of the boundary conditions, the emissions in actual customer operation, as a rule, are below the regulatory limits.
Compliance with the limits must be demonstrated in complex compliance measurements in the laboratory and on the road for each vehicle type. The vehicles with portable emission measurement equipment (PEMS, English be.: Portable emissions Measurement System) equipped. The exact procedure is described here and in the Video track.
