BMW Group the first automobile manufacturer in the “Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative“

14.3.2019 Munich. As the first automotive manufacturer in the world, the BMW Group has joined the “Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative” (SRTI).

In March 2018 the “Sustainable Shipping Initiative”, which was launched, independent Initiative aims to improve measures of transparency and awareness with a view on the issues in ship recycling. Thus, the BMW Group is setting a sign for a more sustainable design of transport logistics.

Sustainability in the supply chain increase.

In the implementation of their sustainability goals, the BMW Group is pursuing a holistic approach along the entire value-added chain. As a global company, the company relies on a diverse logistics network for the transportation of the vehicle parts to the factory (Inbound) to the finished vehicle distribution to customers (Outbound). The logistics of on-the-lake takes on a key function. All the more important for the BMW Group, responsible for design and shipping logistics, in particular in the recycling process of ships.

The SRTI is pursuing a voluntary, market-oriented approach to sustainable ship recycling. As an Online platform fostering the exchange of information on ship recycling procedures and policies and ensures greater transparency in the Maritime sector. The Initiative takes into account all the interests of the members, to develop common solutions and a new standard for responsible ship recycling.

So, in the own company, the BMW Group has always developed a sustainable recycling processes – in particular in relation to the vehicle recycling. In order to increase the recycling Council successively tested, the company in its Recycling and disassembly center, therefore, continuously recycling concepts for innovative components of the vehicle. Furthermore, the BMW Group promotes, in cooperation with research institutes and suppliers, the implementation of new recycling technologies. With the principle of “Design for Recycling” wants to ensure that at the end of the life cycle of the vehicles, a maximum recycling of the components in the material circulation is possible.
